Case Study: BT

“Choosing Thomson as the supplier of the BT Home Hub reflects our confidence in their ability to meet our requirements. The Home Hub is a truly innovative device that gives BT a strategic, future-proof platform for the delivery of the most comprehensive package of broadband-related services to our customers.”
-Warren Buckley of BT Retail

BT    BT needed an attractive home broadband offer that would support fast broadband speeds, provide quad play services and be capable of online upgrades to add new features. It also had to be extremely simple to install and use, with no need for an engineer to visit the premises.

Profile
BT is one of the world’s leading providers of communication solutions and services operating in 170 countries. Its principal activities include networked IT services, local, national and international telecommunications services, and higher-value broadband and internet products and services.

A complete solution for sophisticated needsThe solution developed by Thomson for BT delivers on all of the requirements. It includes a cordless DECT handset for wireless voice over IP telephony with very high quality sound. The Home Hub supports multiple lines and phones, and can be upgraded to handle attractive new services.

Customers also enjoy fixed/mobile convergence; the Hub automatically transfers cell phone calls made in the home to the fixed line to reduce call charges. Demonstrating the platform’s expandability, BT is now using the Home Hub for BT Vision, an IPTV and video-on-demand service.

Top design & top quality boost revenuesBT highlighted the sleek Home Hub design in high profile TV commercials, underlining the service features and ease of use as well as the hub itself. Current promotions feature a “limited edition black Home Hub.”

Results have been spectacular with BT’s broadband revenues increasing by 28% in a single year and 58% of customers opting for the higher value packages in which the Home Hub was included. In July 2008, Thomson announced that shipments of BT Home Hub wireless gateways had passed the three million mark in fewer than two years since the devices were deployed by BT in the United Kingdom.

The Thomson Home Hub delivered a powerful mix of services which BT has leveraged into a remarkable success, making fixed/mobile convergence, quad play, home networking and wireless high speed broadband so simple that huge numbers of homes are now using them.
