Thomson’s history in compression research dates back more than 20 years and includes many successes. Thomson was the first to deploy digital compression (MPEG2) in the original digital satellite delivery system for the consumer market (DirecTV), and has subsequently applied it to many of its ongoing businesses including DVD authoring, broadcast equipment, and consumer devices. In audio, Thomson has been a pioneer with technical contributions to the popular MP3 audio compression format, and subsequent improvements such as MP3pro, and MP3 surround. Thomson continues to advance Compression technology, including major contributions to the new MPEG-AVC (H.264) standard and other ongoing industry standards.
