Thomson engineer wins award at FemtoForum

7/3/2009

The Femto Forum, the independent industry association that supports femtocell deployment worldwide, announced the winners for the inaugural Femtocell Industry Awards, at a gala awards dinner at Femtocell World Summit in London. The awards recognise outstanding achievement within, and contributions to the femtocell industry.

The awards were open to the whole industry and are judged independently of the FemtoForum by a panel of distinguished analysts, journalists and industry experts, chaired by Professor William Webb, Head of R&D at Ofcom. The awards attracted more than 70 entries from companies around the world and across the mobile value chain.

In the category "Contribution to femtocell standards", Taka was voted winner by the jury: "for his pivotal role in defining the femtocell management specifications by working through the Femto Forum, the Broadband Forum and the 3GPP".

"When we started our activities in this technology domain, we agreed on the importance of leveraging Thomson's incumbent strengths from the fixed access business, whilst we were building up the new technology. Having TR-69 adopted in Femto Forum, accepted in 3GPP - the governing standards body for the mobile world - and documented in Broadband Forum, is a major achievement for Thomson, that will allow an increased competitive positioning of our products today and in the future. I congratulate Taka whole heartedly on this achievement.", said Stan Claes, in charge of the Femto activity in Thomson. Dr. Trevor Moore, heading the Femto R&D team added: "I am delighted with this decision which reflects the dedication and hard worl which Taka devoted to the industry over the last 18 months."

Taka San's main background is 2G and 3G infrastructure product development. Previously, he has worked at Motorola cellular infrastructure organization and has done most of the engineering work from future product achitecture design all the way down to product deployment and support role. Since 2006, Taka San has been with Thomson as a system engineer and has been one of the pioneer contributors to the femtocell project.
